Scott Walker (born Noel Scott Engel) was the lead singer of The Walker Brothers (who were not brothers at all), and after a string of successful mid-60's records, he launched a solo career, in which he specialized both in translated Jacques Brel songs as well as his own and other brilliant songwriter's compositions. "Jackie" (Brel's French language original is called "Jacky") was the first song on his second solo album, 1968's Scott 2, and released as a single the previous year. The up tempo arrangement helps Walker's version eclipse the original - by far. Although I love Jacques Brel's music, this version of "Jackie" may actually be my all time favourite Brel moment. It's a joy to hear, again and again and again and again.
