Happy 71st birthday to New Orleans living legend Dr. John! Born Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr., he started out as a recording artist in the late 1960's when he created the persona Dr. John The Night Tripper. He's a brilliant piano player, and his music is steeped in a distinctly Louisiana/New Orleans tradition. Still it took him until 1992's Goin' Back To New Orleans to record an entire album composed of classic New Orleans music. Included on the album is the humorous "How Come My Dog Don't Bark (When You Come Around)" about the narrator's wife, her lover and their usually extremely mean-spirited dog. Here's a live clip from 2009 with the good doctor in his usual fine form.
