When Van Halen were recording "Jamie's Cryin'" for their 1978 debut album, singer David Lee Roth wanted a cleaner vocal, but the band and producer Ted Templeman wanted it otherwise. Roth was sent outside to smoke a cigarette and also drank half a bottle of whiskey, then half an hour later returned to record the song. The take took about 45 minutes and is one of my favourire Van Halen songs, although it's drummer Alex Van Halen's least favourite.
