Oooooh, another soul classic, also from 1967! Dan Penn and Chips Moman's fabulous "Dark End Of The Street" has been covered by more artists than you can possibly count, but James Carr did the original - and, claims many, the best - version. This is absolutely breathtaking. Carr's deep, authoritative voice does wonders, and the arrangement is pure genius; understated, sober and extremely well-played. One of the best songs ever written?
