Curtis Mayfield left The Impressions in 1970 to embark on a solo career with the album Curtis. The album's highlight is the nine minute "Move On Up", an incredibly soulful and dancefloor-friendly kind of socially conscious lullaby. With horns aplenty and a fantastic groove, percussion that beats most of what has gone before or since and of course Mayfield's astounding voice, "Move On Up" remains a classic for the mind and for the feet. In 2001 the Canadian group Bran Van 3000 recorded a song they called "Astounded", featuring a guest spot from Curtis singing "Move On Up". That's great too, but now, let's hear it one more time for the great man himself.
