Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy, Jr.

Happy 36th to Sufjan Stevens! "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." is probably his most well-known song, an eeriely beautiful piano ballad about one of modern society's most notorious serial killers. Gacy was known as the Killer Clown who raped and murdered 33 teenage boys and young men in the seventies, and according to Stevens' persona in the song, "I am just like him". He's later stated that "we're all capable of what (Gacy) did". Very good song, very creepy subject. It's taken from Stevens' 2005 concept album Sufjan Stevens Invites You To: Come On Feel The Illinoise.

Watch and listen

A painting of several of the lyrical elements from Illinois: UFOs and Superman fly over the Chicago skyline, with a goat standing in the bottom left corner and a gangster in a pinstripe suit standing on the right. Above this, text reads "SUFJAN STEVENS invites you to: Come on feel the ILLINOISE" in a variety of scripts and colors.
