"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Know" (1984) was The Smiths' fourth single, and fourth creative triumph as such. They'd also released their brilliant self-titled debut album earlier that year, and "Heaven Knows..." preceded the compilation album Hatful Of Hollow. All this, and also their fifth single "William, It Was Really Nothing", in the span of one and a half year. An output like that, of such enormously high quality, would never happen today. The Smiths existed for little more than four years, but their legacy is remarkable. And "Heaven Knows..." is just a tiny piece of the picture, but what a piece it is! A truly wonderful song!
