After his first solo album Full Moon Fever (1989), Tom Petty returned with a new Heartbreakers album in 1991. But like Full Moon Fever it was, to many old fans' dismay, produced by Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra fame. Lynne's trademark sound was also evident on albums by Roy Orbison and George Harrison around the same time and of course on albums by The Traveling Wilburys, Lynne's pet project with all of the above as well as one Bob Dylan. Personally I like these albums, and I like Lynne's sound. His work for Petty resulted in two very good albums, although they're decidedly more pop-oriented than anything he's done before or since. The title track off Into The Great Wide Open is a case in point, a great pop song, with an excellent (and expensive) music video featuring Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway, Gabrielle Anwar and Matt LeBlanc.
