Elvis Presley had a major comeback single with the wonderful "In The Ghetto", a surprising choice of song from the King back in 1969. It was written by Mac Davis and is a chilling, realistic look at the brutal inner city life, where a young boy is shot to death when trying to steal a car, incidentally at the same time that his own, instantly fatherless son is born. Not exactly the Elvis of "Return To Sender" or "His Latest Flame", to put it mildly, and it's less surprising that Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds did a cover of it in 1984. Great version too!
