Lyle Lovett - This Old Porch

"This Old Porch" is my favorite Lyle Lovett track. It's from his eponymous debut album (1986), released at a time when artists such as himself, Nanci Griffith, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, Robert Earl Keen Jr. (whom he co-wrote the song with) and others came to attention and marked a shift in what country music could be, turning it away from the mainstream Nashville sound, bringing it back to its roots, whether it was to the big Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens and his like or the "downhomey" folk feel of Texan troubadours in the Guy Clark vein. Lovett's debut album is full of great songs, and "This Old Porch" is king among them, a love letter to a Texas of the past, of Lovett and Keen's childhood years. Keen has of course also recorded it, calling it "The Front Porch Song". Here is Lyle's wonderful version:
