This song is a prime example of Hal David's skills as a romantic lyricist. With musical partner Burt Bacharach he wrote numerous wonderful love songs, and "(They Long To Be) Close To You" is one of the best. It was first recorded by Richard Chamberlain in 1963, but The Carpenters' 1970 hit version is the best known. And when Karen Carpenter sings about how "On the day that you were born the angels got together, and decided to create a dream come true" it sounds like the most incredibly beautiful declaration of love that has ever been sung. They simply don't write songs like this anymore.
