A synth pop classic and gay anthem from 30 years ago, Bronski Beat's debut single "Smalltown Boy" sounds exactly as good today as it did upon its 1984 release. The melancholy of the song, singer Jimmy Somerville's haunted falsetto voice and the exquisite melody perfectly fits the video where the singer plays the titular character who escapes the troubled existence of a gay teenage boy in a small town and heads for the big city. This is simply a very good song.
