Julia Holter - Don't Make Me Over

Songwriter Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David is a pairing that, apart from Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards and maybe a few others if you really put your mind to it, has never been bettered. Writing scores of wonderful hits for Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones, Herb Alpert, Jackie DeShannon, Dusty Springfield and so many others, they wrote themselves into music history forever. "Don't Make Me Over" was Dionne Warwick's 1962 recording debut, a stunning ballad with sweeping strings and her wonderful voice up front, and now it has been covered by electronica artist Julia Holter who recorded a fab version of another soul classic, Barbara Lewis's "Hello Stranger" for last year's Loud City Song album. Her take on "Don't Make Me Over" is even better, an ethereal-sounding recording that would fit perfectly into any David Lynch film. Goosebumps all across the board.
