Do The Right Thing 25 years: Public Enemy - Do The Right Thing

25 years ago exactly, on June 30th 1989, Spike Lee's amazing film Do The Right Thing was released. 25 years on, it's still one of the best films I've seen, and so it's only fitting to show the opening credits, also among the best ever. Watching Rosie Perez dance to Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" during the entire opening that lasts for almost four minutes, you know you're got something coming. It's powerful stuff, choreographed, filmed and edited to perfection and the song remains Public Enemy's best. So there!

Lloyd Cole with Jill Sobule - For The Good Times

In 2006 there was released a tribute album called The Pilgrim to legendary singer/songwriter Kris Kristofferson featuring acts like Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Shooter Jennings (son of Waylon), Rodney Crowell and other more or less predictable names, people who are as familiar with Kristofferson's songs as it's possible. One track surprisingly stands out however. British singer/songwriter Lloyd Cole's take on "For The Good Times", on which he's enlisted the help of US indie darling Jill Sobule, is the most intimate, sensitive and intensely beautiful version of this song that I've ever heard. It's been recorded by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ray Price, Al Green and countless others, but none of these versions are worth the dust gathered in the studio when Lloyd Cole recorded his quite, quiet, quiet take on this sad and wonderful song.

"Don't look so sad, I know it's over, but life goes on, and this old world will keep on turning. Let's just be glad we had some time to spend together, there's no need to watch the bridges we've been burning. Lay your head upon my pillow, hold your warm and tender body close to mine. Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft against the window, make believe you love me one more time, for the good times. I'll get along, you'll find another, and I'll be here if you should find you'll ever need me. Don't say a word about tomorrow or forever, there'll be time enough for sadness when you leave me. Lay your head upon my pillow, hold your warm and tender body close to mine. Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowing soft against the window, make believe you love me one more time, for the good times."

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Jungleland

This version of "Jungleland", played live at London's Hammersmith Odeon, was part of the package when Columbia Records released a 30th anniversary edition of Bruce Springsteen's classic Born To Run album in 2005. Originally released in 1975 it was, of course, Springsteen's breakthrough album, containing some of his most well-known songs. "Jungleland" is the epic, 10 minute closing track, a fabulous tale of "The Rat" and his escapades, rightfully described on Wikipedia as mirroring "the pattern of the entire Born to Run album, beginning with a sense of desperate hope that slides slowly into despair and defeat." As good as Springsteen still is, I do miss the sense of urgency of his earlier songs, and his first albums, up to and including Born In The U.S.A., are his best. It's as simple as that.

R.I.P. Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street

It's a sad thing when people die, and when they happen to be among the world's greatest soul singers, music suffers as well. Yesterday Bobby Womack died, 70 years old, from causes still unknown. Womack's name will live on though, and people will keep on playing the many fantastic songs of his, ranging from the 1964 Valentinos single "It's All Over Now" (listen to Rolling Stones' version here) to his 2012 comeback single "Please Forgive My Heart". And below you'll find "Across 110th Street", his 1972 single that may be the song he's most famous for. R.I.P., great man!

HIT ALERT! Magic! - Rude

Canadian pop/reggae band Magic! released their debut single "Rude" last October, but it's the last month that it has gained real exposure. This week it's at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and I have to say it's one of the best songs I've heard in quite some time. It's a surefire hit, a fantastic tune with a melody to die for and an overall feelgood vibe, a song to equal anything by Maxi Priest, UB40, Aswad and other poppy reggae acts. "Rude" will most certainly be EVERYWHERE this summer, deservedly so. It's simply a ridiculously good pop song!

Rolling Stones - Terryfying

Rolling Stones' 1989 album Steel Wheels was a very welcome return to form at the end of a decade that saw the band slowly fade from rock gods to... well, something less. "Terryfying" was the fourth and, dare I say, best, single off the album, a strutting, proud and boisteroussong that is primarily driven forward by Bill Wyman's steady bass and Charlie Watts' drums. It's unusually rhythmic for Rolling Stones with its swamp-rocky, Creedence-y beat and crystal clear production, and the fact that it stands a bit out from much of their other songs is of course what makes it so great.

My fabulous summer playlist - 100 reasons to cheer

Wonderful summer, you are here! And any summer needs a good soundtrack. I have compiled a list featuring 100 songs, old and new, from across the world. Note that these choices are my definitions of what sounds like summer though. You may disagree with a few of them, but hopefully you'll still find lots of songs to enjoy through the next weeks and months.

I have compiled the lists both in WiMP and Spotify and they differ slightly because all my choices were not available from both streaming services. 95 out of 100 songs are the same though, so it shouldn't matter all that much anyway.

Deafheaven - Sunbather (full album)

American black metal/shoegazing band Deafheaven make some of the most intense music I've ever heard. I haven't played their second album, last year's astonishing Sunbather in a while, so when I heard it again yesterday I was really happy to do so. At first listen the band's music sounds like pure and utter noise, but dig a little deeper and you'll reap great rewards. There is method to Deafheaven's madness, there is melody within the noise, there is surprising beauty. Good luck in distinguishing the lyrics of singer/screamer George Clarke though. That is impossible. It's the energy that's the catch here, not the words. This summer I'll see Deafheaven live at Oslo's Øya Festival, and I'm SO looking forward to it! Meanwhile, here's the full album.

You Can Call Me Al").

Restore To Past - Desert Drive

I dare say it's possible to call Restore To Past a Norwegian super group, as its members are known from acts like Euroboys, Paperboys, Gluecifer, Jim Stärk, Beezewax, Ulver, King Midas and Cato Salsa Experience. And more besides. All in all these bands represent a solid chunk of Oslo's musical scene the last 10-15 years, and it has taken ten of these years to actually record the eponymous eight track debut album. It has become a wonderful album, for now unfortunately only available digitally, but hopefully to be released in physical formats at some point. The first single is "Desert Drive", a head-on Tom Petty-inspired guitar-driven pop song, with some fabulous hooks and a great melody. The album as a whole has that very good west coast vibe, with elements from bands like Fleetwood Mac, America and their like, and the band also emulate these older acts in the same fashion as retro guru Jonathan Wilson does, kind of recreating the past for a new day and age. A great album that deserves international recognition, as it's got some really good songs and is beautifully played and produced.

J. Bayou - Protector

J. Bayou, known to his friends and family as Jørgen Johnsen of Fredrikstad, Norway, released an album called Drum in 2009 under the moniker Name. Apparantly he enjoyed a certain recognition for the album and the single "Hand Me Down", but according to the newspaper Natt & Dag he never became more than "almost famous". Now he's trying once again. He's renamed his act and become J. Bayou because of his "close ties to New Orleans" and has just released his new single "Protector", a gospel-tinged pop/soul track, that should appeal to anyone with a little love for Stevie Wonder, George Michael and similar acts. J. Bayou has an astounding voice, and the song is simply great. It's got a big sound, and a very nice video to accompany it. Let's hope this guy goes from being "almost famous" to "quite famous", or even "really famous".

The Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored

The atmospheric opening track of 1989's eponymous debut album by The Stone Roses is among the best tracks on an album that - to my ears - is slightly overrated. I'm not saying it's without qualities, and I acknowledge its importance and influence, but the fact remains that I was never a huge fan. I still appreciate several of the band's songs of course, and "I Wanna Be Adored" is simply gorgeous. I love the repetitiveness of it, the monotony, the sudden outbursts of guitars, and the overall somber mood. If only the rest of the album had been as good as this...

Gotye - Hearts A Mess

Flemish-born Australian singer/songwriter Gotye struck gold with his 2011 single "Somebody That I Used To Know", a duet with New Zealand singer/songwriter Kimbra that became a huge worldwide hit the following spring. Although more immediate than most of his other songs, that's no reason to discard the rest of Gotye's output. "Hearts A Mess", for instance, is a mesmerizing piece of music from his second album, 2006's Like Drawing Blood. And the music video is incredible too, an animated short film by one Brendan Cook that is nothing short of fascinating, set to an edited version of the song. A must see video and a really beautiful song.

Anyone who's seen the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black, based upon the memoirs of Piper Kerman's memoir by former Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, is familiar with the title song "You've Got Time". Love this song!

Hamilton Leithauser - 11 O'Clock Friday Night

Hamilton Leithauser used to be the lead singer in now disbanded The Walkmen, and released his debut solo album Black Hours two weeks ago. Lead single "11 O'Clock Friday Night" is the most perfect indie-pop party anthem I've heard in a long time with its sing-a-long chorus and good vibes. Everybody sing now: "You and me and everybody else, you and me and everybody else, you and me and..." There you go!

Nick Drake - Northern Sky

It's easy to feel sorry for Nick Drake, a shy, sensitive and brilliant songwriter who didn't enjoy the slightest mainstream recognition in his own lifetime, but has been canonized in the years following his early death from a drug overdose at 26. He only released three albums, all wonderful, but none of them even remotely successful. Bryter Layter, released in 1970, was the second of these, and it's from this that the stunningly beautiful "Northern Sky" is lifted. The song is of course lovely in itself, but what sets it apart from most of Drake's songs is John Cale's incredible contribution, adding piano, organ and celesta to the mix, and lifting "Northern Sky", literally, to the heavens. Fun fact: This song directly inspired The Dream Academy's 1985 classic "Life In A Northern Town".

Jessie Ware - Tough Love

Great new single from UK singer/songwriter Jessie Ware whose 2012 debut album Devotion was a true delight, featuring great songs like "Running" and "Wildest Moments". She's currently preparing the follow-up album that hopefully will be released in the autumn, but for now first single "Tough Love" will have to do. It's a wonderful electronic pop song, downbeat and very cool-sounding featuring Ware's stunning voice. I think a major breakthough is in store for her with the new album if this song is anything to judge by. Unfortunately the single's actual release date is as far away as August 4, but you can listen as many times as you like on her Soundcloud page.

Arif - Lowkey

Love it!

Julia Holter - Don't Make Me Over

Songwriter Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David is a pairing that, apart from Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards and maybe a few others if you really put your mind to it, has never been bettered. Writing scores of wonderful hits for Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones, Herb Alpert, Jackie DeShannon, Dusty Springfield and so many others, they wrote themselves into music history forever. "Don't Make Me Over" was Dionne Warwick's 1962 recording debut, a stunning ballad with sweeping strings and her wonderful voice up front, and now it has been covered by electronica artist Julia Holter who recorded a fab version of another soul classic, Barbara Lewis's "Hello Stranger" for last year's Loud City Song album. Her take on "Don't Make Me Over" is even better, an ethereal-sounding recording that would fit perfectly into any David Lynch film. Goosebumps all across the board.

R.I.P. Gerry Goffin: James Taylor - You've Got A Friend

Yesterday legendary lyricist Gerry Goffin passed, 75 years old. The ex-husband and cowriting partner of singer/songwriter Carole King had a huge number of hit singles. The pair wrote hits for The Shirelles, The Monkees, Bobby Vee, Little Eva, The Drifters, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin and many more. "You've Got A Friend" was actually recorded simultaneously by both Carole King and James Taylor with shared musicians in 1971, and the two versions ended up on Tapestry and Mud Slide Slim respectively. Taylor's version was released as a single and became a huge hit, reaching the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 in the UK, and remains his signature song although he didn't write it himself. No wonder, beautiful as it is. R.I.P. Gerry Goffin.

Daft Punk - Veridis Quo

Daft Punk's 2001 album Discovery was a big departure from the house sound of 1997's debut album Homework, but personally I like it better. I haven't played it in ages though and when a few days ago I heard this track I didn't recognize it right away. "Veridis Quo" is a stunningly beautiful instrumental track, sampling Cerrone's "Supernature" and Secret Service's "Aux Deux Magots", coming across as some kind of futuristic sci-fi love song without words. To me it sounds as if the road to last year's perfect Random Access Memories album starts here.

Super Furry Animals - Juxtaposed With U

I had forgotten exactly how awesome Super Furry Animals' 2001 single "Juxtaposed With U" is, a quirky, astoundingly well-written and melodic pop song. It was originally planned as a duet, but after East 17 singer Brian Harvey and bad boy Bobby Brown both turned the Welsh band down, singer Gruff Rhys decided to walk it alone, using a vocoder on the verses to give the impression of another singer. It works fantastically, but it would undoubtedly have been a great duet, and not necessarily with the Super Furries either. This is the kind of timeless song that would work for anyone, but it remains a bit obscure, although it reached number 14 on the UK singles chart. No matter, this is pop music that is pretty much is as good it gets, with more than a hint of 70's Philly soul thrown in. A classic!

The best album intro in the history of popular music? Quite possibly. The Clash opened their 1979 masterpiece London Calling with the ominous title track about a London facing a new dawn, and not necessarily a good one. Bobby Darin was unlucky person, haunted by tragedy and disease, dying from heart failure aged 37, but what a singer! A successful television personality, film actor, singer and songwriter, he enjoyed several big US hits in the late 50's and early 60's, and among his most cherished ones are "Beyond The Sea", a huge worldwide hit in 1960, but released in 1959. It's originally a French 1946 composition by Charles Trenet called "La Mer" that was transformed into English by Jack Lawrence. Here's a live performance in which Darin gets to show his comic talents at the same time as he's singing all hell out of the song. Classic stuff, and definitely the stuff that legends are made of. Last Friday legendary rock band The Rainmakers out of Kansas City, Missouri visited Oslo for a rousing show, and they are currently on a Norwegian tour. Among the many classics the (several times) reformed band performed was this one, the gorgeous "Spend It On Love" off their third album, 1989's powerhouse The Good News And The Bad News. Funny thing is, they have released a new record called Monster Movie, their seventh to date, and it's not bad at all. Webb Wilder - Baby, Please Don't Go

"Baby, Please Don't Go" is a classic blues song of uncertain origin, popularized by Big Joe Williams who recorded it for the first time in 1935, and later by Northern Irish outfit Them, led by Van Morrison, in 1965. Morrison's group turned it into a rock song, with his trademark howl renewing it further, and it's upon that version that fictional character Webb Wilder (born John Webb McMurry) has built his own, featured on his 1991 album Doo Dad. Wilder's frenetic guitar playing and the pumped-up arrangement turns the song into a swamp rock monster, putting it firmly down in the Mississippi River region of the American south. It sounds absolutely terrific!

U2 - Running To Stand Still

"Running To Stand Still" is lifted from U2's 1987 masterpiece The Joshua Tree and is a song that's musically steeped in American blues and folk music, brilliantly evoked in conjunction with producer Daniel Lanois. His knack for atmospheric soundscapes is almost unparalleld and is taken to the brink in this song. Curiously the melody itself was written quickly whereas Bono worked a lot harder forming the lyrics about a heroin-ridden couple in Dublin's Ballymun flats, a group of seven high-rise tower blocks, referred to in the song as the "seven towers" that the protagonist sees only one way out of. "You got to cry without weeping, talk without speaking, scream without raising your voice"... Word!

John Coltrane - Everytime We Say Goodbye

I'm not anywhere near being a jazz connoisseur, but I know what I like, and I really like to hear saxophone genius John Coltrane performing Cole Porter's immortal "Everytime We Say Goodbye" with his small ensemble on the gorgeous 1961 album My Favorite Things. This is beauty and perfection as exquisitely performed as can be, by a bunch of musicians whose purpose seem to project said beauty and perfection onto the world as such. Coltrane's haunting soprano sax lights up our days and nights and is accompanied by McCoy Tyner's piano, further aided to stunning effect by Steve Davis's authoritative bass playing and Elvin Jones's whispering drum arrangement, and they all add up to something that is pretty much otherworldly. If you're not touched by this, you are not human.

Kaja Gunnufsen - Au

Bravo!

This is just one of those songs that makes you want to get out in the sun, meet people, have a beer, be in love and all those things that are so much better without the burden of sweaters, heavy jackets, boots and other items of clothing associated with colder climes.
