Dan Penn and Chips Moman's "The Dark End Of The Street" may very well be one of the best songs ever written. Period. The soul ballad first recorded by James Carr in 1967 have been covered by countless artists, for good reason. Among those who have done it are Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Richard And Linda Thompson, Flying Burrito Brothers and Clarence Carter. It was also featured in Alan Parker's 1991 film The Commitments, where it was sung by Andrew Strong to great effect. Here, though, is the original. Enjoy!
