The roots of British rock band The Cult was as the gothic post-punk band Southern Death Cult. Lead singer Ian Astbury then met guitarist Billy Duffy and established Death Cult, while eventually they shortened the name to just The Cult, in the process having transformed into a more traditional hard rock band. The 1985 single "She Sells Sanctuary" was their breakthrough hit and remains their best song.
