The Clash - Lost In The Supermarket

The Clash' 1979 album London Calling changed the way I listened to music forever. I was 13 at the time, an age where things made big impressions, and the versatility of that album was something that blew me away. The band that used to be punk rockers had turned into an outfit that played rockabilly, jazz, ska and more, always with amazing pop melodies. London Calling's 19 songs are as diverse as they are good. It's an album that screams "Anything goes!" "Lost In The Supermarket" is one of the lighter songs, a pretty pop song that sounds as good now as it did then. And just so I've said it: London Calling is my all time favourite album. To me, no other record is remotely close.

E*I*E*I*O - Go West Young Man

I had completely forgotten about Wisconsin band E*I*E*I*O until a friend reminded me about them this morning. They were what allmusic.com calls "one of the worst-named bands in Wisconsin history (if not all of rock & roll)", but a great roots rock band all the same. They released two albums, Land Of Opportunity (1986) and That Love Thang (1988) before calling it quits. They did however reform some years ago and released a new album simply titled E*I*E*I*O in 2007. "Go West Young Man" is classic fare though, from their 1986 debut album, and it still sounds fantastic.

P.M. Dawn - Set Adrift On Memory Bliss

Heavily sampling Spandau Ballet's wonderful 1983 ballad "True", the American hip hop duo P.M. Dawn enjoyed a major hit single with "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" in 1991. It's a laidback, pre-chillout tune, that would have fit nicely onto any Café del Mar compilation, or for that matter, a pre-chillwave tune. The accompanying music video features a cameo appearance by Spandau ballet singer Tony Hadley. This is a great track.

Hvil i fred, kjære hedersmann!

Kristina Train - Dark Black

Kristina Train is this year's dark horse for me. Having released what I'm pretty sure will be the very best song of 2012, "Dream Of Me", she releases her new album today, and having listened to it once, I'm pretty pleased. Dark Black is her second album, after 2010's Spilt Milk, and the title track is the new single. By visiting her website you can watch a lyric video scroll down the screen, set to this utterly beautiful ballad. What a voice!

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir (live)

On November 17th the Led Zeppelin reunion show from 2007 is released on CD, DVD, vinyl, BluRay and what-have-you, under the title Celebration Day. The band has released an online teaser in the form of "Kashmir", one of their best-loved songs that originally appeared on their 1975 album Physical Graffiti. It sounds kind of awesome, of course.

deLillos - Another Girl, Another Planet

Norwegian talk show Trygdekontoret is something else, in every way. One of the show's best treats may be the music that's always surprising. Last night Norwegian pop band deLillos came on to perform a version of The Only Ones' punk classic "Another Girl, Another Planet", and it sounded great. By clicking the link below, you'll get the show in its entirety, but if you just want to listen to deLillos, go to the 37 minute mark. You'll also see lead singer Lars Lillo-Stenberg look quite similar to Roger McGuinn og The Byrds cirka 1965. Enjoy!

The Williams Brothers - Can't Cry Hard Enough

Is this the saddest song of all time? Thankfully, "Can't Cry Hard Enough" is also one of the most beautiful songs I know. It was written by David Williams and Marvin Etzioni, and released on The Williams Brothers' eponymous 1991 album. They are the twin nephews of recently diseased singer Andy Williams of "Moon River" fame. American singer/songwriter Victoria Williams (no relation) has also recorded it, before The Williams Brothers actually, for her 1990 Swing The Statue album. The song has been covered by several more artists, including Christine Collister and Michael Weston-King's band The Good Sons.

David Sylvian & Riuichi Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours

A serious contender for the title "Most hauntingly beautiful song ever written and recorded", David Sylvian and Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Forbidden Colours" featured in the movie Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence in 1983. The melody is written by Sakamoto, known from Yellow Magic Orchestra, and the lyrics were written by Sylvian who had just disbanded his band Japan. "Forbidden Colours" is four minutes of pure magic, the minimalistic arrangement and Sylvian's incredible voice lifting the song into a landscape of surreal beauty. It could actually be my all-time favourite ballad - and I have a few.
