The Cure - The Empty World
The Top (1984) may be The Cure's least loved album, and although it's certainly no masterpiece, I actually quite like it. Especially side 2 of the original LP is nice, and "The Empty World" is my favourite. Robert Smith's imagery of a girl gone mad is in its way very fetching, and the marching beat of the song spells imminent doom and disaster, something the jolly melody played on a whistle of some kind can't disguise for more than a few seconds. The Cure were - and are - very good at being gloomy.
